But karma quickly caught up with Trudy. The next morning, the kitchen was flooded after Trudy’s careless disposal of meat oil combined with an excessive amount of drain cleaner caused the pipes to burst. Her once-fancy kitchen was ruined, and Trudy, who had treated Mia like a servant, was now facing the consequences of her own recklessness.

With repair bills mounting, Mia’s father finally put his foot down. He told Trudy the family budget was tight but not so tight that he couldn’t give Mia $500 for her prom dress. Trudy was furious but couldn’t deny her role in the disaster. Her lavish party had drained the family funds, and her careless actions caused the damage. For the first time, Mia felt truly supported and seen by her dad.

In the days that followed, Trudy’s attitude softened. She allowed Mia to get a part-time job and even offered to help her find a prom dress. Whether this change would last was uncertain, but for the first time, Mia felt like the universe was on her side and that things might finally be looking up.
